Wireless Flat Panel Detectors: Retrofitting Legacy DR Rooms and Taking Imaging to the Bedside
A fully new DR suite is a six-figure CAPEX conversation. For many hospitals, clinics, and veterinary groups, the smarter move is a retrofit: keep the X-ray generator and the room, swap the CR cassette or old amorphous selenium detector for a modern wireless FPD. The image quality jump is immediate; the invoice is a fraction.

Why Wireless Changed the Economics
Early FPDs were tethered — fine for fixed bucky, awkward everywhere else. Wireless (802.11ac / GigE backhaul, hot-swap batteries) unlocked three use cases that drive most overseas distributor inquiries:
- Retrofit of legacy DR: Extend the life of a 10-year-old generator. Many regions (EU, LATAM, SEA) still run Siemens/Kodak/Shimadzu installs from the 2000s — the tube is fine, the detector isn’t.
- Portable / bedside DR: ICU, NICU, ER, nursing homes, disaster triage. One staff member moves the cart; the detector goes under the patient same as a cassette, but the image pops on the workstation in <3 s.
- Veterinary & orthopedic satellite clinics: Lower dose tolerance isn’t the driver here — throughput and ruggedness are. GOS scintillator + carbon-fiber shell survives the kennel run.

What to Check Before You Buy
- Active area vs your bucky size: 14×17″ (35×43 cm) is the global default; 17×17″ for chest rooms; 10×12″ for NICU / vet extremity.
- AED (auto-exposure detection): Critical for retrofit — the detector needs to trigger off the generator’s own pulse, not just software sync.
- Battery swap & charge-while-working: Look for ≥8 h clinical shift per battery, hot-swap so you don’t power down mid-room.
- PACS integration: DICOM 3.0, Worklist, MPPS — non-negotiable if your customer is a hospital.
- Certifications: CE (MDR), ISO 13485 at minimum. FDA 510(k) if you’re targeting the US channel.
C-arm and Fluoroscopy: A Different Spec Sheet
If the end-use is live guidance (orthopedic nailing, pain clinic, vet surgery), you’re not buying a static DR detector — you need a C-arm compatible FPD, typically smaller active area, higher frame rate, CMOS or optimized a-Si. This is a separate SKU family; don’t let a supplier quote you a 14×17″ wireless panel for a C-arm head. It won’t fit, and the readout lag will frustrate the surgeon.
